Police Cracks Down On Conmen, 50 Arrested
Kampala police have arrested at least 50 suspected conmen, Chimp Corps reveal
The city Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Ibin Ssenkumbi says the operation was aimed at sweeping the thugs out of the city following a steady rise in cases of obtaining money by false pretence and extortion.
Detectives picked the notorious men from black spots of Arua Park, Nakivubo channel, along William Street, Nakumatt and Garden City.
Ssenkumbi says police intelligence operatives have been deployed at ‘bases’ of the conmen with the view of arresting them.
“We have now put in place 24-hour surveillance on areas where they operate from. We shall pick all of them. It’s just a matter of time,” cautions Ssenkumbi.
Kampala is a city haunted by conmen.
Hundreds have lost their money in dubious deals masterminded by these thugs.
A few days ago, State House was compelled to come out and announce state education scholarships are given on merit.
This was precipitated by police reports that conmen had turned the bursary scheme into a cash cow by obtaining money from unsuspecting folks, promising to include them on the list of beneficiaries.
Ssenkumbi out of 50 suspects held over the weekend, 21 are perpetual offenders.
He says they resort to crime simply because they are always released on bail or bond.
Police urges Ugandans to report such elements to nearest local authorities.
