New IGG Declares War On Corrupt Gov't Mafia
12:30pm: The new IGG tells journalists that she is ready to fight the corrupt mafia in government.
She appeals to the public for support to end the frightening levels of corruption in the country.
Mulayogonja notes corruption hurts public service delivery and perpetuates poverty in a country.
She attributes the high levels of corruption to poor governance and politics.
“Whenever someone is arrested over corruption, the whole incident is politicized. The public needs to be enlightened on what corruption is and how this disease can be cured,” said Mulyagonja.
10:00pm: Mulayogonja arrives at Parliament.
9:00am: The newly appointed Uganda Inspector General of Government (IGG) Irene Mulyagonja Kakooza will Wednesday appear before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee for vetting.
President Yoweri Museveni on April 12 appointed the High Court Judge a substantive IGG after a huge public outcry that corrupt officials were getting off the hook simply because the leadership of the Inspectorate was not fully incorporated.
The Parliamentary Committee is headed by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.
Parliament is expected to give Mulyagonja’s appointment a big nod, considering her untainted career as a judicial official.
She recently threatened to disband the entire corrupt Inspectorate.
Speaking to Chimpreports.com recently, Information Minister Karooro Okurut appealed to Ugandans to embrace Mulyagonja’s appointment.
“Yes, Mulyagonja is our new IGG. Give her all the support she needs,” said Okurut.
The post fell vacant two years ago.
The appointment of Mulyagonja was perceived by the public as a huge slap in the face of acting IGG Raphael Baku who had publicly called on the President to confirm him as full IGG.
Museveni’s refusal to promote Baku raised eyebrows considering that the President had earlier told European delegates at State House, Entebbe he feared appointing a game ranger who would instead turn into a poacher.
It’s highly possible Museveni was referring to Baku.
