The seasoned politician, who in 2009 crossed to the ruling National Resistance Movement party (NRM), died on Thursday at his home along Kakiiza Road in Fort Portal Municipality.

He succumbed to asthma, diabetes and hypertension, according to his wife Monica Butime.

Rev Richard Baguma, one of his old friends and Tooro Kingdom Regent, says Butime was one of the people who participated in the liberation struggle that ousted dictator Idi Amin and Milton Obote.

Baguma says Butime dearly loved his kingdom.

Fort Portal municipality mayor Alex Ruhunda mourns: “He was an intellectual giant from this area who lived a humble life.”

Ruhunda says Butime was one of the founders of NRM, a reason he came back to the party he formed.

Ruhunda expresses his disappointment that the government did not give him support after retiring from work.

“The government did not give him support even when hedefected from FDC. I feel he deserved better treatment from government before his death,” Ruhunda added.

The Kabarole district woman MP Victoria Businge Rusoke says Butime has left a big gap in the leadership of Kabarole and the country at large.

Prof. Edward Rugumayo says he is saddened by Butime’s death, adding, Uganda has lost a patriotic man.

Who was Butime and his political journey

John Butime started his political journey as a student when he contested for the guild presidency of Makerere University.

He won the 1968 guild president race before joining the Uganda Railways Cooperation after his undergraduate studies.

After working closely with the emergent NRA/M in the 1980s, Butime was appointed Kabarole special District Administrator in 1991 and later transferred to Kapchorwa.

An elder brother of Col Tom Butime, he became the chairperson of FDC after the death of Alhaji Suleiman Kiggundu.

He later crossed to the NRM after meeting the NRM secretary general Amama Mbabazi in Fort Portal.

He is survived by a wife Monica Butime and three children.
