Kids Arrested After Marriage; Mothers On the Run
Kampala Police detectives are investigating circumstances under which two families endorsed the marriage of their children in Mukono town.
OC CID Wandegeya Police Station Herbert Wanyoto says 16-year-old Kintu and his ‘wife’ Kisakye, 14, have been arrested and detained.
He says the pair has been living like man and wife for a period of four months in Kalerwe, a Kampala suburb.
“These two kids were told by their parents to marry simply because they were in love. We have arrested them and are now hunting for their parents who are on the run,” says Wanyoto.
The Police officer notes Rose Nakinga (Kintu’s mother) and Kisakye’s parents connived to let the two enjoy the fruits of marriage.
Wanyoto says the teens were picked from Kalerwe market last Friday where they were selling fish.
Early mariages are illegal but common in Uganda.
They are mainly caused by illeteracy of parents and sometimes poverty, according to Wanyoto.
Detectives also visited a dilapidated room where the kids have been having sexual relations.
Wanyoto says he has on several occassions telephoned the girl’s mother to turn up at the Police station for questioning in vain.
“We suspect the teens’ parents are in hiding. But we shall get them. Kisakye’s mother is playing tricks,” says Wanyoto.
He further states the parents will be charged with child neglect.
