President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to reveal the fate of Col. Kizza Besigye today when he visits the family of a cop killed during Wednesday’s bloody opposition riots in Kampala.
Impeccable State House sources say Museveni will Thursday afternoon arrive at Mobile Police Patrol Unit barracks in Naguru, Kampala where he will spend some time consoling murdered AIP John Bosco Ariong’s bereaved eight children and wife.
Museveni’s spokesperson Tamale Mirundi was not readily available for comment.
Kampala Metropolitan police publicist Ibin Ssenkumbi could not confirm Museveni’s visit but referred Chimpreports.com news desk to the force’s deputy spokesperson Judith Nabakooba.
She said: “It’s too early to confirm the visit. Please contact me after thirty minutes.”
However, sources say Museveni will give a speech during the visit in which he will condemn opposition’s violent demonstrations.
The President will also tell the nation whether Col. Besigye faces murder charges considering that he led an illegal procession in the busy city centre in which a police officer on duty was killed.
As of now, Besigye has been placed under house arrest at his Kasangati residence.
In a press statement issued last night, Police regretfully revealed Ariong had been killed in a violent assembly at Kampala Road.
“Assistant Inspector of Police Ariongo John Bosco, a 48 year old officer with 26 years of service to the Police Force died enroute to hospital having been hit by a rock to his head. He is survived by one wife and eight children.”
“The murdered officer had been deployed as part of an operation to ensure the maintenance of public order during an illegal procession led by Dr Kizza Besigye,” Nabakooba said in a statement.
“Investigations are at a very early stage but Uganda Police Force states its absolute determination to bring those responsible for the death to justice. I wish to reiterate that wanton violence against Police officers on duty shall be sternly dealt with to the full extent of the law,” she concluded.
