Besigye Arrested, Murdered Cop Named
5;54pm: Media outcry as The Observer photojournalist Edward Echwalu is thumped by four policemen at Kiira Road police station where Besigye is detained.
FDC leaders including Michael Kabaziguruka are attacked as well.
5:15pm. IGP Kale Kayihura, in a statement read by deputy police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba, names John Ariongo as one of their own murdered during the chaos.
Assistant Inspector of Police Ariongo John Bosco, a 48 year old officer with 26 years of service to the Police Force died enroute to hospital having been hit by a rock to his head. He is survived by one wife and eight children.
The murdered officer had been deployed as part of an operation to ensure the maintenance of public order during an illegal procession led by Dr Kizza Besigye.
Investigations are at a very early stage but Uganda Police Force states its absolute determination to bring those responsible for the death to justice.
I wish to reiterate that wanton violence against Police officers on duty shall be sternly dealt with to the full extent of the law.
The deputy police publicist further reveals 50 suspects have been placed into custody over today’s violence.
3:40pm: IPC coordinator Kalinge Nyango calls Chimpreports.com news desk, saying police have denied their lawyers access to the arrested party officials.
3:20: Wafula Oguttu and Alice Alaso arrive at CPS to check on arrested party leaders.
3:14pm: Police intelligence start search of missing detective suspected to have been killed in Kampala downtown.
3:10pm: Besigye is stealthily sneaked out of Central Police Station and rushed to Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Kibuli.
2:35: Besigye is intercepted by heavily-armed police personnel at Bank of Uganda along Kampala Road.
He is forcefully plucked out of Kampala Woman MP Nabillah Naggayi’s car. Her driver only identified as Kavuma attempts to resist arrest.
He sustains injuries in the fight with police commandoes.
Others arrested include Mayor Erias Lukwago, Ingrid Turinawe, Nabillah Naggayi and other five opposition supporters in Besigye’s Red Brigade.
Several counter terrorism police units are dispatched to contain Besigye's supporters as teargas chokes city dwellers.
2:29pm: Besigye beats security, moves towards Kampala city centre. Teargas canisters are lobbied especially along Ben Kiwanuka streets to contain the surging crowds.
The opposition leader's Red Brigade commanders open running battles with police.
1:35pm: Latest information coming in indicates that police have started deploying in Kafumbe Mukasa market in Owino, down town Kampala, after Col. Kizza Besigye stormed the area.
FDC top shots have confirmed to Chimpreports.com that Besigye is making a surprise tour of the markets in the explosive area.
Security forces have in the past fought deadly battles with traders and thugs in Kisekka and Owino market.
