SCANDAL: Did Makerere Don Tanga Odoi Fail P.6 Six Times?
A top Makerere don has petitioned the Minister for Education Jessica Alupo to investigate reports that the institution’s Staff Association boss Tanga Odoi was irregularly recruited into University service.
The head of Computer Science department Dr Florence Tushabe, in a letter dated January 5, asked Alupo to also probe Odoi after it emerged he was dismissed from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa due to intellectual incompetence.
The latest development is a new twist to the ongoing power struggle at the campus.
The allegations could taint Odoi’s reputation who had branded himself as a champion for the fight against maladministration at the University.
Efforts to reach him for a comment were futile as his known mobile phone was switched off.
Tushabe also alleges, in a letter copied to Makerere University Council chairman Dr. Eng. Wana-Etyem, that Odoi’s best score at his O’level was a C5 in history and that he repeated P.6 six times in Kisoko Boys’ school.
“Although Dr. Tanga is eager to publicize the perceived academic incompetence of his colleagues, on the contrary it is his intellectual standing that is highly in question,” says Tushabe.
“Is it true that Dr. Tanga was irregularly recruited into the University service, since he did not hold the mandatory Second Class Upper at his Bachelors, a requirement for recruitment into the University service then?” Tushabe notes.
She also wants the minister and University authorities to establish reports that Odoi, despite being a fiery critic of the University’s administration, “holds no single academic scholarly article to his name, despite being in the academia for so long, and despite having all the opportunities to do so.”
“Is it true that the best score at his O’level was a C5 which he scored in history? And that he repeated P.6 six times in Kisoko Boys’ school?” she further asks.
“Isn’t it a shame for a leader of academicians to fail to rise to a level where he can officially head the smallest academic unit in the University, i.e. a department?” the petition exclusively obtained by Chimpreports.com adds.
Tushabe insists heading an academic department requires the minimum qualification of a Senior Lecturer, which Odoi cannot ascend to without publishing.
“I request that you investigate Dr. Tanga’s behavior and performance as a University Lecturer and protect the University staff from his uncouth methods of operation,” says Tushabe.
I was promoted to the rank of the Senior Lecturer using the New Entrants track because I satisfied all the requirements for the position of Senior Lecturer under this track.
The petition was filed after Odoi’s behavior became intolerable, according informed University officials.
