Mbarara Tense As Besigye Aides Are Granted Bailed
Tension is steadily hitting peak levels in Mbarara town after two defiant opposition activists were arrested for holding a public rally.
They were appealing for the end of Col. Kizza Besigye’s house arrest.
Besigye was yesterday restrained by heavily armed police personnel from leaving his Kasangati mansion. Vincent Musiime and Malise Baineomugisha are now detained at Mbarara police.
Police says walk-to-work activities are aimed at overthrowing the government of President Yoweri Museveni. The momentum of walk-to-work in Mbarara seems to underline the growing opposition in Museveni’s home area.
In a related development, three FDC top officials who were arrested Tuesday as they walked alongside Col. Kizza Besigye have today been set free by Court sitting in Kasangati.
Fred Kato (Besigye driver), Julius Amanya and Moses Byomugisha have today been released on bail.
They were facing charges of malicious damage to property, assault and causing grave injuries to a cop.
Top FDC shots including Gen. Mugisha Muntu, Nandala Mafabi and Alice Alaso attended the court session.
Youthful FDC supporters cheered as the trio was granted bail. However, there were rumours that a plan to re-arrest them was in the pipeline after police tightened security at the court premises.
But Kampala police region spokesman Ibin Ssenkumbi says “the deployment is aimed at maintain law and order in the area.”
