Manfred Walter, 58, a resident of Bunga suburb, was arrested together with his three associates Henry Byenkya, David Mugisha and Isaac Bwambale at Mantras Hotel in Kansanga. Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson Ibin Ssenkumbi says Walter conned Shs82m from a city businessman promising to supply him minerals such as tanzanite. Tanzanite is the blue/purple variety of the mineral zoisite (a calcium aluminium hydroxy silicate) which was discovered in the Mererani Hills of Northern Tanzania in 1967, near the city of Arusha and Mount Kilimanjaro. It is used as a gemstone. Upon raiding his house, Walter was found in possession of five fake passports all in his names, over 50 ATM bank cards, 10 mobile phones, 10 Sim cards – all active, and a new laptop. DANGEROUS: The suspects were found in possession of dozens of Sim cards, ATM cards and ten mobile phones “We are holding Walter. He will be charged with obtaining money by false pretence,” says Ssenkumbi. It’s yet clear why police is hiding identity of the victim. Police sources say Walter conned a highly placed government official and businessman. Born in 1954, Walter is the former serviceman in the Germany army. He retired at the rank of Major.
