LIVE: Museveni Attends 20th Mubiru Memorial Lecture

4:00pm: Museveni arrives for the function two hours late. Governor Bank of Uganda welcomes him, saying this is the first time the president is attending such lectures in twenty years.

11:15am: News coming in indicates that President Yoweri Museveni will on Monday attend the Joseph Mubiru Memorial Lecture in Kampala.

Museveni is expected to arrive at 2:00pm at Common Wealth Resort, Munyonyo, Kampala. 

Security has been tightened at the event which is expected to attract scholars from across the region. 

10:00am: Prof. Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Laureate in Economics and a professor of Economics at Columbia University will attend this year’s Joseph Mubiru Memorial Lecture in Kampala. He arrived in Uganda on Friday. 

The distinguished academic will give a key presentation on the topic: “Market Failures in the Financial System:  Implications for Financial Sector Policies, Especially in Developing Countries.”

Held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the function has attracted Uganda’s top government officials, economists, researchers, academics and members of the public.

Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, Director of the Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University is the main discussant.

This function is celebrated every year in memory of Mubiru, the first governor Bank of Uganda.

Prof. Stiglitz is a pioneer in the field of economic theory and a chief policymaker.

Professor Stiglitz’s work has focused on explaining the circumstances in which markets do not work well, and how selective government intervention can improve their performance.

“The Joseph Mubiru Memorial Lecture is a public event, hosted by Bank of Uganda and free transport will be provided at the Bank of Uganda Head Office from 11am to 1:30pm,” the Central Bank said in a statement.
