ICEA Group Launch Drive to Increase Insurance Knowledge

ICEA group has launched a consumer education drive aimed at increasing people’s knowledge and understanding of insurance in a bid to deepen insurance penetration in Uganda.

The company will have an intensive week of a public information campaign in which consumers will be educated on insurance policies, discount in-depth interpretation of insurance contracts and products available on the market.

According to officials, ICEA customers will also have an opportunity to have their queries addressed at various information points set up for the customer appreciation week. The information points will be across the country and at the company headquarters at Rwenzori Courts Nakasero, Kampala agency offices, Mbarara ,Mbale, Arua, Gulu and Kabale.

Speaking at the customer appreciation week launch at the their head offices on Monday, ICEA CEO Mr John Karionji said “There has been a long standing misconception that insurance is a product for the middle and upper economic classes, which is not the case; we have taken time to develop products for the lower end of the market. This is the message the public needs to know”

Karionji also said that currently the insurance penetration in Uganda is the lowest in East Africa at only 0.85% of the GDP.

“Low knowledge of insurance has been the biggest hindrance to faster uptake of insurance services so we have decided to educate our people more about insurance,” he said.

“Life insurance for instance is yet to be fully embraced by most Ugandans. Most of them only take insurance to comply with the law and yet there is no law that makes any of the life insurance policies a mandatory requirement.”
