Bodaboda riders working at Ssaza stage in Ibanda Municipality stormed the RDC’s office yesterday demanding an explanation on how a robbery suspect escaped from police custody.
Police had last week hunted down and arrested a man believed to have stolen a motorcycle number UEJ 631K belonging to Charles Tumwiine.
The suspect was identified as Cliff Moses alias Katagwenda, a resident of Ibanda district, who was arrested with the motorcycle in Kanoni in neighboring Kiruhura district and detained at Ibanda Police Station.
However, on reaching the station on Tuesday, Tumwine says he was stunned to be told by the OC CID Susan Tumugumye that the suspect had escaped from the cell.
“When I asked how the suspect had escaped, the OC CID told me that it is normal for suspects to escape from cells,” he said.
Tumwine says he found that the suspect had placed a fake number plate on his motorcycle which was removed and he left with one without a plate and that police refused to give him a document allowing him to ride a numberless motorcycle.
His colleagues on hearing the news organized themselves and stormed the RDC’s office seeking answers.
The RDC Mr. Eliasto Akatuheebwa tried to calm the cyclists down by call the CID officer, who confirmed to him that the suspect had escaped and that he was being hunted.
The RDC summoned the CID boss and some of her officers to report to his officer on Wednesday (today).
