“I therefore fully support the candidature of H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the NRM flag bearer,” said Kiyingi amid reports of clandestinely mobilising for Mbabazi.
“Accordingly it is not true that I joined or defected to JPAM or the Go Forward pressure group as has been alleged and reported.”
Mbabazi is said to be Kiyingi’s political Godfather.
According to highly placed sources, Mbabazi reportedly used Kiyingi who was then legal chief at Uganda Medical Stores to fight then Health Minister Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi.
Sources say confidential information used to fight Muhwezi in several corruption scandals was leaked by Kiyingi.
Since then, Muhwezi and Kiyingi have never seen eye to eye despite being ministers in Museveni’s government.
According to inside information, Kiyingi up to now remains a close ally of Mbabazi.
“If it were not for being a Minister, Kiyingi would be on the grassroots openly campaigning for Mbabazi,” said a source who has worked with Kiyingi for several years.
On his part, Kiyingi explained in a statement on Friday that the reports of his alleged defection are based, in part, on the choice of the chair as his symbol which is also used by Mbabazi.
Kiyingi further elaborated that he took part in the recent NRM primaries for Bugabula South Member of Parliament which he said were characterised by gross irregularities and malpractices.
“We rejected the declared result and petitioned the NRM Electoral Commission. Our petition was not handled satisfactorily. Following wide consultations with the electorate and a petition signed by over 29,000 duly registered Bugabula South voters advising me to stand I decided to stand as an Independent,” he explained.
“I chose to use the Chair as my symbol because it is very well known to my supporters since I used it in the last 2011 elections where I stood as an Independent having been cheated in the NRM primaries in almost similar manner and circumstances. To date many of my supporters have my old posters with the chair symbol in their houses.”
