Government has intervened and delivered 500 bags of rice to starving residents of Bwambara Sub County in Rukungiri District.
The food is to be handed to 10000 people from three parishes of Kikarara, Kikongi and Bwambara, all in Bwambara Sub County.
The relief was delivered to the sub county by the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness after district leaders reported
an imminent famine in the area following crop failure.
Last week, security minister Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde visited the area following reports that about 5 people had starved to death, while others had resorted to cooking papaya leaves.
Andrewson Katebire the Rukungiri LC5 chairman thanked government for the timely intervention, and also advised the locals to start cultivation for the next planting season as they wait for the rains.
Martin Mugabi, the Rukungiri RDC asked the leaders as well as the people of Bwambara not to sell the food to buy alcohol.
Bwambara Sub County has been one of the food baskets of Rukungiri district, maintaining steady supply of rice, ground nuts, maize, millet, beans and many others.
