The police on Saturday mounted an operation and killed 3 suspected pirates of Tanzanian origin before arresting three others following an attack on Ugandan fishermen between Dolwe and Mgingo Islands.

Enanga identified the suspects as Giriki Malya, 37, Nicholas Jakipol, 35 and Brian Mashare, 36, whereas the deceased included Emmanuel Karubente, Kassim and Ndaro all from Musoma in Northern Tanzania.

Kayihura Applauds his Men

Meanwhile the Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura has applauded his men for professionally and bravely responding to the attack by the pirates.

Kayihura said he was proud of the team of marines that participated in the operation  which he said was risky as the targets were fast moving whereas the boats were swaying constantly.

“The force vows to deal with anyone involved in any acts of piracy on all the national waters in a bid to hold them accountable for their deeds,” Enanga said.

He however noted that the search for the fire arm that was being used by the suspects is on going after being dumped in the lake after the exchange.

“The Tanzanian authorities will in due course be contacted upon establishment of the suspects’ proof of origin.”

Katumba said in a statement that with deep sorrow the military regretted Bamuze’s death which he said was untimely.

He said Bamuze died on the evening of October 4, generic 2015 on his way to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.

“An autopsy is being carried out to establish the cause of death,” said Gen Katumba.

“Maj Gen Bamuze was a peace maker who because of his love for his country Uganda, denounced rebellion and together with his fighters of Uganda National Rescue Front II, laid down their weapons to join the Uganda People’s Defence Forces to contribute to national peace and security,” he added.

The ceasefire agreement saw Bamuze’s combatants integrated into the mainstream army.

The UPDF boss said Bamuze will be remembered for his “unwavering contributions towards the stability of Uganda” and would be “dearly missed by the UPDF fraternity.”

The deceased will be laid to rest on October 7, 2015 at his ancestral home in Aringa County, Yumbe District.
