Gen. Aronda: Kagezi a Victim of Organised Crime

Aronda Nyakairima on Wednesday briefed Parliament on the shocking murder of Senior State Attorney, dosage drug Joan Kagezi who was also the acting Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gen. Aronda, who on Tuesday morning visited the scene at Kiwatule, Kampala, where Ms Kagezi was precisely singled out and shot dead, said the killing of the prosecutor is part of an “organized crime”.

He did not mention the group to which the suspected killers belong but stopped short of saying Ugandan security agencies are struggling to contain a wave of extreme acts bordering on terrorism or rebellion.

“Rt. Honourable Speaker, the preliminary findings suggest that the murder of Joan is part of organized crime that the police and sister security agencies have been warning us about since September last year,” Gen. Aronda said.

He pointed out that on September, 13, 2014 a group of suspected terrorists armed with explosive devices and suicide jackets with the intention of executing a deadly a mission on the next day were apprehended by police inside the country.

After the arrests, said the Internal Affairs Ministry, a number of high profile murders carried out in uniform manner started taking place mainly in Busoga and the central region.

“At the close of last year and early this year, several Muslim leaders were gunned down in Mayuge and here in Kampala. The LCIII Chairperson in Namayingo district was also killed.

“Honorable members will note that there are similarities in the methods the murders used in many of these cases including selectively picking their targets and use of motorcycles to get away.”

Aronda said the security has managed to track down suspects in Busoga, dismantled their cells and valuable leads have so far been gathered.

In the same vein, Aronda assured Members of Parliament that police is working round the clock to bring Ms Kagezi assassins to book.

“The police and sister security agencies embarked on investigations into the murder of Joan and are analyzing all information they are collecting. They are following all leads and the hunt for the killers is on.”
