Gangsters Have Invaded Journalism – Mwanguhya

The Field of journalism in Uganda has been invaded by what veteran scribe Charles Mwanguhya Mpagi has daubed a fierce gang of fraudsters, web perhaps more than any other sector in the country.

Mwanguhya, who heads that East African News Paper Bureau in Uganda says he is worried about the rate at which fake journalists are joining the profession.

He was speaking as chief guest at the farewell party of third year journalism students of Uganda Pentecostal University (UPU) Kahungabunyonyi campus, held at Golf View Boma in Fort Portal town on Saturday night.

Highlighting on the challenges journalist experience in the field, Mwanguhya said that the fourth estate these days has a worrying number of fake reporters who have spoilt it.

“In Kampala I always shudder, looking at the number of people storming news conferences and workshops claiming to be journalists,” he said. “They con people, intimidate them and basically give a bad name to journalism.”

Mwanguhya informed the young journalists that learning starts the day they step in the field.

Those that feel stressed by the profession; he advised them to feel free to embrace any other job, noting that only the passionate can be journalists.

“Opportunities in journalism are many but this field needs a focused, hardworking and committed person.”

At the event, Mr. Bamanyisa Patrick Black Abooki the president Rwenzori Journalists Forum lectured the students on ethics, which he said is not limited to journalism but the rest of the sectors.

Once journalism in completely invaded by the corrupt he noted, the country will have lost the fight against corruption.
