Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda, the priest of Kitanga Catholic Parish in Kabale Diocese, has started novena prayers and fasting, calling upon God to guide members of parliament not to support the amendment of the constitution to remove the presidential age limit.
Fr Batanyenda revealed yesterday that he will be praying and fasting every day while putting on the pro age limit red ribbon.
In the prayers, he says, he will be asking God to counsel the MPs as well as President Museveni to drop the idea of amending Article 102(b) of the constitution, so that the country can have peaceful handover of power from the current president to another.
“This is not an NRM or FDC but a national issue, and I am standing as a voice of the voiceless,” he said.
The outspoken Parish Priest also lashed out at Bishop Enoch Kayeye, the Bishop Emeritus of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, who openly came out to support the constitutional amendment.
Bishop Kayeye on Monday attended a meeting of Regional NRM leaders which was organized at Cephas Inn in Kabale by David Mafabi, President Yoweri Museveni’s, private secretary for political affairs. The meeting unanimously endorsed the amending of the constitution.
Fr. Batanyenda who is also the Kigezi Inter- Religious Council chairman said the Bishop had betrayed the people by supporting life presidency.
