12:30PM: FDC lawyer, Wilfred Murumba passes on. “It’s true, he has just died. It’s a pity that his life has just been taken like that, ” a grief-stricken family member who prefers anonymity tells ChimpReports.
10:35AM: A top Ugandan lawyer, Wilfred Murumba, is fighting for his life at Kampala Hospital where he is admitted in critical condition over what relatives described as a “painful stomach complication.”
It is widely held that Murumba, who recently sat for interviews for the position of judge at the High Court, ate food laced with toxic substances.
Engineer Kafeeza, who has been following closely the treatment of Murumba, told ChimpReports on Tuesday: “We are waiting for results of a specialised investigation into body sample tests carried out by Kampala hospital and a medical facility in United States.”
“During an investigation on Murumba’s internal organs, it was found that he had a spot on the liver. We don’t know what caused it,” he added.
Kafeeza rubbished reports that the lawyer was poisoned, saying, “Until we get a report from doctors, we will not speculate on the cause of our friend’s illness. We can’t confirm now whether it is because of poison or not.”
“What we know at this time is that the liver got a problem.”
Asked to describe Murumba’s health condition, Kafeeza noted: “Very critical. He can’t even speak.”
He said the medical results would determine the family’s way forward in regard to the troubled doctor’s treatment.
Murumba sat for High Court interviews alongside State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi, who was murdered in Kiwatule on March 30.
The duo and many others were responding to an advert placed in the papers urging legal minds to compete for the slots in the High Court.
It is understood Murumba, who has represented opposition ironman Dr Kizza Besigye in several court battles, was shortlisted among Uganda’s finest lawyers qualified for the position of judge.
He would later sit for another round of interviews.
On Monday last week, the Kabale-based lawyer complained of “severe stomach complications” before travelling to Kampala for emergency treatment.
On Wednesday, the lawyer was admitted at Mulago Referral Hospital where friends felt his condition was fast deteriorating thus relocating him to Kampala hospital.
Relatives said he was on Saturday transferred to Kampala hospital where medics have done a lot to stabilise him.
Murumba intends to stand for the position of MP Kabale Municipality on the FDC ticket.
He has handled several court cases involving Besigye and FDC officials in Kabale District.
