Ex Rwanda Mining Minister Imena, Arrested

Former Minister Imena has been arrested

Rwanda National Police (RNP) have arrested and detained several senior government officials including former State Minister in charge of Mining, sale Evode Imena.

“It’s true, he was arrested on Friday alongside two officials from the Mining Ministry,” said Rwanda Police spokesperson Theos Badege on Monday afternoon after being contacted by ChimpReports.

Badege said Imena is being held at Remera Police Station in connection with cases of favouritsim and illegal issuance of documents during his reign as State Minister.

He cited Rwanda’s Penal Code Article 647 which prohibits making a decision based on favouritism, friendship, hatred or nepotism.

“Any person in charge of a public or private service with general interest, who makes a decision based on favouritism, friendship, hatred or nepotism to any person who seeks a service, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of one (1) year to three (3) years and a fine of three hundred thousand (300,000) to two millions (2,000,000) Rwandan francs,” the article reads in part.

Other suspects detained at Remera Police Station in Kigali are Francis Kayumba and Joseph Kagabo, all officials from the Mining Ministry.

Asked when the suspects would appear in court, Badege cited the criminal procedure guidelines which provide five days to police as they carry out investigations and five more days for prosecution to decide whether the matter goes to court.

Badege said investigations into the case continue.
