The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), mind has set aside 18, 000 million dollars to fight child marriage in the 16 districts in Lango and Acholi regions.

The UNICEF program officer in charge of northern Uganda Ms Lillian Apio said the funds will be used to facilitate campaign to end child marriage in the regions.

Ms Apio was on Friday addressing a stakeholders meeting organized by the civil society coalition advocacy for children at Red Cross hall in Apac town.

She noted that the organizations will be working jointly with the department of the community development and education sector in order to improve the welfare of children especially girls in order to reduce the rate of early marriage in the communities.

The District Probation Officer, Mr Leonard Agum said many people especially defilers, commits the offence under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.

“The rate of school drop outs is high and so are the cases of defilement. However members of the community don’t report such cases because they don’t trust the justice system of this country,” Mr Agum said, adding that they prefer to sort out related issues on their own.

He strongly urged members of the community to report cases of child marriages.
