If Uganda’s goalless draw with Ghana recently in Namboole left little chances of Basena’s side to qualify for the World Cup, then yesterday’s result in Alexandria completely demolished the left chances.
Mohamed Salah scored a brace as the Pharaohs defeated Congo 2-1 amidst wild scenes of celebrations at the Borg El Arab Stadium, in a victory that sealed their fate to qualify to the World Cup past hopefuls Uganda.
Following a goalless draw at halftime, the hosts looked frustrated with stars like Ahmed Fathy, Mohamed Elneny, Mo Salah and Ramadhan Sobhi all failing to find a cutting edge.
It was at the hour mark when the Liverpool ace broke the deadlock and the Egyptians looked on course until Arnold Moutou leveled matters with just two minutes left on the clock.
Egypt later got a penalty in the stoppage time and it was Salah again to notch in a last minute gasp to ensure that Egypt break the World Cup hoodoo and return to the prestigious tournament since Italia 1990.
The victory took Egypt to 12 points, leaving second placed Uganda and Ghana in 3rd with just 8 and 6 points respectively.
With just one match left to play for each team, the Pharaohs have sealed their top spot on the Group E table regardless of the results in the remaining November fixtures.
Uganda will visit Congo as Ghana Black Stars will host Egypt in the remaining Group E fixture.
Egyptian Pharaohs now joins Nigeria’s Super Eagles as the two teams from the CAF Confederation that have so far sealed their places at the FIFA 2018 Russia World Cup.
