DP Condemns Col. Kulaigye Involvement in Bad Gold Trade

DP Spokesperson, Kenneth Paul Kakande

Opposition Democratic Party (DP) has condemned the use of the army and other security forces by UPDF Political Commissar Col. Felix Kulaigye to “torture and arrest civilians so as to enrich his personal businesses.”

Col. Kulaigye who also represents the army in Parliament reportedly commanded a raid by a squad of officers from police’s Flying Squad, information pills regular police officers and plain clothed officers attached to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence on Matrich Holdings Limited, a city company dealing in minerals.

“We have no problem with Col. Kulaigye dealing in Gold trade but we are opposed to the use of security forces to advance his personal business which is not acceptable by law,” DP spokesperson Kenneth Paul Kakande told Chimpreports on Tuesday.

It was reported that during the raid on the Ntinda based company, three employees were brutally arrested, undressed and property including 600gms of gold and a car confiscated.

Kakande said that the party is opposed to invasion and raid of other peoples’ offices without applying the law.

“If in any case Kulaigye was cheated, he would have reported the matter to police which handles all criminality rather than misusing his powers and authority as an army officer.”

The UPDF spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda on Monday revealed that Col Kulaigye would have to be investigated, since the kind of behavior is not tolerable in the army and if indicted, he will take individual responsibility.

According to police publicist Fred Enanga, the case is currently being investigated under file number 21/06 13:41 at the Kampala Central Police Station where the four employees of the company are being held.
