Kenneth Jogo Biryabarema, the Rubanda district LC5 Chairman has ordered head teachers in the district to send away pupils who come to school without packed lunch.
This he said is one of the measures aimed at improving academic performance in the new district.
He said the district has been registering poor performance in Primary Leaving Examinations because many children study on empty stomachs and cannot concentrate, hence the need to compel parents pack lunch for them.
In 2016, 576 pupils out of the 3656 who registered for Primary Leaving Examinations in Rubanda district didn’t qualify to join any post primary education. According to a district report, 452 pupils were Ungraded and the 124 in grade X.
Biryabarema made the call last week while speaking at the celebrations to mark World Teachers’ Day at St. Johns Ikumba primary school in Hamurwa town council.
At the event, the Rubanda district Uganda National Teachers’ Union-UNATU Chairperson Anthony Musasizi decried poor working conditions characterized by long distance, lack of accommodation and poor remuneration.
The Rubanda district woman Member of Parliament Prosy Begumisa Mbabazi pledged to advocate for good working conditions and increased remunerations for teachers. She contributed 2million shillings towards the Rubanda SACCO for development.
