High Court Acting Assistant Registrar, rx Joy Bahinguza Kyabagye has issued an interim order instructing the National Drug Authority (NDA) to reinstate fired Head of Legal Services Mark Kamanzi.
Kamanzi’s contract was terminated by the Authority’s Board of Directors on June 6, online following two meetings on that day and on May 24.
In a letter signed by the new board chairman and former Mbarara Municipality MP Medard Bitekyerezo, Kamanzi was relieved of his duties without providing reasons why before ordering him to hand over office the Secretary to the Authority and the Head of Human Resource.
They further promised to pay his June Salary, accrued annual leave days and gratuity.
Kamanzi who has held that position since January 2016 however declined to leave office.
“I reject service of this termination notice for reasons that no reason has been advanced for my dismissal,” he wrote back to the Authority.
He said the termination was in breach of provisions of the same Authority Human Resource Manual before rushing to court to block the same.
Through his lawyers of Kituuma-Magala & Co. Advocates and Kalenge Semambo & Co. advocates, Kamanzi is seeking to overturn the decision by the board and to be be permanently reinstated.
Court has since ordered that NDA reinstates Kamanzi with full pay and benefits as per his contract until disposal of the main application.
Prior to joining NDA, Kamanzi worked as the Executive Director & Director Legal & Corporate Affairs for the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
