Former coordinator of intelligence services Gen.  David Sejusa on Tuesday asked the General Court Martial to temporarily release him on bail following the dismissal of an application in which he accused court of trying him illegally after dismissing himself from the army.

The defence lawyers told court that the senior UPDF officer is of advanced age having clocked 62 years, on top of being the sole bread winner for his family which necessitates that he is released temporarily.

Gen. Sejusa presented 2 sureties including embattled Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and a one Dr. Deo Kizito Lukwago a surgeon at Case Medical centre who presented themselves as friends to the accused.

Meanwhile the state prosecutors led by Col. Col. Asingura Kagoro, Maj. Moses Buwaso , Maj.Raphael Mugisha and Lt. Ambrose Iguma told court that they didn’t want court to deny Gen.Sejusa his right to bail but noted that  doing so would be a grave and regrettable mistake.

They noted that investigations into the charges against the former coordinator of intelligence services are almost complete and that there was no need of granting him bail.

“He is a very influential and respected person by the public being a 4 star general in the army. He has held many positions as an MP, Special Adviser to the president and coordinator intelligence organs and there is likelihood that he might influence the investigations and witnesses,” said Col. Asingura Kagoro.

The prosecutors told court that it is a norm for the army court to demand that sureties to the accused are army officers at the same rank as the accused, adding that these can be in position to advise and direct him in case of jumping bail which they said is not the case with Gen. Sejusa.

“I do not see Lukwago or Dr.Lukwago command a general of over 30 years’ experience in the army to come to court. We ask that court declines to grant him bail.”

The General Court Martial chairman   Maj. Gen.Levi Karuhanga asked for more time  to look into both  parties’ submissions before making a ruling on the bail application.

He adjourned the case to February 23 when court gives its ruling on bail application and sent Gen.Sejusa back to Luzira prison.
