A number of these are nearing completion around the City such as Kira – Kabira road and junctions, http://cosmeticluxus.com/wp-includes/class-wp-http-encoding.php Bwaise Junction, Mambule road and Makerere Hill road. The construction of Bakuli – Nakulabye – Kasubi Road is in the pipeline.
The road widening and construction are funded by the World Bank and the Government of Uganda under the Second Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project. This project is worth US$183.7 Million and is implemented by Kampala Capital City Authority.
“We do have funding from the World Bank for construction work to start,” said Justus Akankwasa, Director Engineering and Technical Services, KCCA.
“However, compensation for right-of-way for road and drainage construction is still a major bottleneck. This has caused some delays in starting construction.
Some of the cases involve mortgaged properties, absent landlords or multiple-owned properties.”
He said, engagements are going on to secure the required right of access. Mr. Akankwasa hailed leaders and resident of Kulambiro Ring Road Kisaasi and John Babiha/ Acacia Avenue for availing land for road construction at no cost.
Fairway Junction is now ready, with traffic control lights switched on. This Akankwasa says, will ease the flow of traffic, reduce travel time, cut fuel consumption, and decrease car fumes to preserve the environment. This redesigned junction connects, Yusuf Lule, Sezibwa, Kafu roads and John Babiha road, formerly Acacia Avenue.
“We are proud to announce that construction and rehabilitation works of the first phase of the Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project is on track,” said Charles Tumwebaze, the Project Coordinator, Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project-KCCA.
“We have completed about 96 percent of the works at Fairway Junction. This includes all road construction and road marking, installation of road signs and traffic control signals.
The only pending work is street lighting and landscaping, which the procurement process is being concluded.”
Commuting around Fairway will further be eased with the upgrading of John Babiha road to a dual carriage. All designs are ready and funds for construction are available. Commencement of construction awaits the procurement of a contractor.
Meanwhile, road construction works along Kira Road and Kabira Junction is making impressive strides standing at nearly 90 percent. Also works on Mambule Road and Bwaise Junction is at 85 percent, mostly due to delays attributed to compensation of properties in the road and drainage corridor, according to Akankwasa.
Makerere Hill Road, is also being rehabilitated from Wandegeya to Nakulabye. The road will be converted into a dual carriage, and the junctions at Makerere University, Gaddafi Road and Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road will have traffic control signals installed. Provisions for signal controlled pedestrian crossings to ensure safety of students have been made for Makerere University and Makerere College School.
The Second Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project (KIIDP 2) seeks to enhance infrastructure and institutional capacity of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and improve urban mobility for inclusive economic growth. There are two components to the project, the first component being city wide road infrastructure and associated investments. The Second component is the institutional and systems development support. This five year project started in May 2015.
