Cisse: We Have a Generation With So Much Talent

Senegal players celebrate Henri Saivet's goal against Tunisia

Senegal qualified to the African cup of nations with a perfect record, treatment winning all their six games.

After two identical 2-0 victories over group B members Zimbabwe and Tunisia with star player Sadio mane scoring a goal in each, coach Aliou Cisse, one of the four indigenous coaches at the tournament, has lauded the team for living up to the billing.

“It was the expectation of the whole country (Senegal) and I congratulate the players meeting that expectation,” Cisse said.

Cisse captained the Lions of Teranga that reached the quarter finals in the 2002 world cup, with a team that has been largely considered as Senegal’s golden generation. He believes, and rightly, the current crop has so much talent.

“Today we have a generation with so much quality, and as a coach I have to work on changing the mentality which is an important element.

“The objective is to uplift the level of football on the continent. The result we see now did not start today. It started long ago. I have never doubted the quality of my team. They (players) have to stop putting themselves under pressure and this one aspect I have been working on.”

Senegal climax their group campaign against North African giants Algeria who risk elimination after failing to win their first two games.
