Chaos as Mayors Elect Association Leadership

Chaos broke out Thursday afternoon at Ntare School Main Hall during a meeting convened to elect the new leadership of the Urban Authorities Association of Uganda (UAAU).

The association brings together all municipal mayors and town clerks in Uganda.

The meeting was called to elect the UAAU’s new leadership that would take it through to 2021.

Other aspirants eyeing the chair included George Fred Kagimu (DP) and Mutwalibu Zandya (FDC).

The house turned rowdy as a number of members shouted in protest. Many of them stormed out and left the venue without participating in the election.

One Achok Jumbe, the mayor Moroto Municipality while speaking to Chimpreports remarked, “They should not have called us to their gimmicks. They should have appointed the leader of their choice.”

The Guest of Honor and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Maj Gen.  Kahinda Otafire advised the aggrieved group to seek redress in courts of law.

“According to the constitution the nomination was free and fair; those who are not contented can go to court.” he said.

According the opposition mayors, Kahinda Otafiire had earlier asked the members to elect the NRM candidate, promising to contribute toward the construction of the association offices in Kampala if they did.

Meanwhile in his speech Kahinda asked the leaders to always work to leave a legacy and work according to guidelines but not to please people because they cannot.

“You can never satisfy the people who put you in office because their expectations are extensive and diverse; if you’re going to satisfy the needs of the electorates you will become a thief,” he said.
