Brig.Muhanga takes over the mantle in Somalia at a time when the UPDF has deployed a total of 2745 troops in battle group 20 to replace battle group 17 that recently finished their one year mandate.

The battle hardened soldier returns to Somalia after handling the capture of Mogadishu by the UPDF in 2011 as a colonel then.

The 4th division commander in July last year oversaw the successful mission to evacuate people from South Sudan as the war continued in an operation code named ‘Wokowa.’

During the Wokowa operation over 20,000 people including Ugandans, South Sudanese, Ethiopians, Indians, British, and Rwandese among other evacuated from South Sudan by the Ugandan army.

Brig. Muhanga was also in charge of the UPDF that deployed in South Sudan as the conflict broken out in December 2013.

The Ugandan army is credited for helping to secure Juba international airport and key government installations as forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar battled.
