Mbarara Police spokesperson Vincent Ssekate says the racket is now targeting big vehicles including tippers, canters and other heavy duty trucks which they sell in Tanzania.

In a space of two months he says, a total of 27 vehicles have been reported stolen.

The police mouthpiece identified the group leader as Robert Kasozi, a rich man who stays in a no man’s land on the Tanzania – Uganda border.

In recently police operations, four members of this group have been arrested with two vehicles including a tipper number UAV 657J, which is impounded at Mbarara police yard.

Ssekate says the thieves work with people at the washing bays and parking yards and use duplicated keys to steal the vehicles.

He named the arrested suspects as Cosma Agaba, Ezra Tumwesigye (Nyakayojo), Muhammad Kizito (Nyamitanga) Mbarara and Alex Sebaggala, a Senior Six student at Kololo High School in Kampala who was netted red-handed, opening a locked car at mid night in Mbarara town.

Ssekate says efforts are ongoing to collaborate with Tanzanian authorities to apprehend all members of this group.
