Winnie Byanyima, the wife of Col Dr Kizza Besigye has expressed confidence that her husband will overcome the treason charges leveled against him last week.
Besigye was last Friday charged summarily with the capital offence by Moroto Chief Magistrates Court before being remanded to the Moroto Government Prison.
Authorities say the former presidential candidate is being faulted for holding a swearing in ceremony of himself when he lost the February poll.
Mrs. Byanyima revealed last evening that her husband was initially denied access to his family and lawyers.
He decided to go on a hunger strike for 30 hours until his family was allowed to bring him food. His lawyer Fred Mpanga however, was still unable to access his client in prison by yesterday evening according to the Oxfam International head.
Byanyima also charged at the Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura for deliberately refusing to inform Besigye’s family about his whereabouts when he was picked up in Kampala and flown discreetly to the north eastern district ahead of President Museveni’s swearing in ceremony.
Mrs. Byanyima however was confident that Besigye will overcome these charges as this isn’t the first time they are being slapped on him.

Earlier last week, the 57 year old told a Kenyan media house at a conference in Rwanda that she and her husband are not afraid of dying in this struggle.
