Besigye, who was picked from Kampala town while leading a procession of supporters to a rally along Nasser Road, is detained at Kiira Road Police Station.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said Besigye being held in their custody does not necessarily imply Besigye is under arrest.
“I am still trying to gather information, but what I know that there has not been any such thing as an arrest,” said Enanga.
“He is at Kiira Road, but does that mean that he has been placed under arrest?” he added before calling for patience.
President Museveni told a press conference at State House Entebbe on Sunday that the army would be deployed across the country to maintain peace and stability.
The Commander of the Military Police Col. Emmanuel Kanyesigye recently told reporters at their headquarters in Mbuya that his force is ready to strike hard on any perpetrators of uprisings during and after the oncoming election exercise.
“If anyone tries to destabilize the smooth running of the electoral process, we shall not allow this to happen. We will definitely take action to return the situation to normal,” Col. Kanyesigye warned.
“We have on many occasions done joint operations together the police and other sister security organs. Our comrades the police and intelligence personnel are on ground and there is no need to fear because it is our role to ensure that peace prevails.”
Police chief Gen Kale Kayihura said the “security infrastructure has capable, experienced and well-trained personnel who have been properly prepared for their electoral duties and responsibilities at polling stations, significant VIP instalments and patrol areas.”
He further stated that the increased Police deployment will be visible all through the country in order to give you all, and the entire world, the assurance that Uganda is at peace and that we have the situation under control.”
FDC ironman Dr Kizza Besigye has been released from Kiira Road Police Station where he was detained today morning after being picked from Jinja Road in Kampala.
Besigye was leading a procession of supporters in the Central Business District.
Police used teargas to disperse the crowds.
ChimpReports understands Besigye was today informed by police he would not be allowed to lead processions in Kampala town as it could result in destruction of property.
