AFCON 2015: All Set for Opener

The 3 weeks 2015 AFCON tournament kick off today at the Bata Stadium.

The three-day door to door polio vaccination drive was successfully kick-started in Kampala today.

The campaign was trumpeted by government on Thursday as a way of avoiding the potential spread od polio from neighbouring countries

Kampala Capital City Authority [KCCA] officials launched the drive in Rubaga division this morning at Malaika Babies Home.

Around the country, vaccination teams will move house to house, markets, streets, places of worship or wherever vaccinating all children in the target age group with one dose of trivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (Topv).

Special arrangements have been made for the island areas, where the vaccinations teams will be dispatched on motor boats.

“During the exercise, all children under 5 years of age whether previously immunized or not, will be given oral polio vaccine drops in the mouth,” said Minister Opendi.

“We shall also use this opportunity to sensitize communities on acute flaccid paralysis surveillance and at the same time identify and investigate any unreported suspected cases of polio,” she said.

The house to house polio immunization exercise does not replace the routine immunization services at the health facilities and outreach posts, according to the ministry.

Polio (poliomyelitis) is a highly infectious, viral disease that attacks the nervous system. Frequently, its victims display no symptoms, but about one in 200 infected children suffers from paralysis and sometimes death.

Anyone can contract the disease, but children under five years of age are the most vulnerable. Timely immunization with the oral polio vaccine is the most effective way to prevent infection.
