web geneva;”>Besides the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA), generic Airtel Uganda also revealed its partnership with Samsung Electronics Africa that has committed to support the largest grassroots tournament on the African continent. Under the multi-million dollar agreement, Samsung will become the official device partner of the Airtel Rising Stars tournament.

The ARS initiative was started as an annual, multi-country grassroots soccer initiative that offers a platform for young boys and girls to play, compete and showcase their talent to scouts in their respective countries, continent and world at large.

The selected players would then get an opportunity to get the state-of-the-art sports training, during a residential clinic. This year the clinic is scheduled to be held in Nigeria and the Gunners have committed to provide UEFA-trained coaches to carry out the training at the clinic.

The Managing Director Airtel Uganda, Mr. V.G. Somasekhar said that, “Airtel is already the largest supporter of youth soccer on the continent and together with our partners we will ensure it is not just the biggest, but also the most consistent supporter of grassroots football in Uganda. It not only identifies and nurtures talent but most importantly provides a window for young boys and girls to market themselves to several scouts.”

Samsung Uganda Country Manager Amit Patel added that “Within the framework of Airtel Rising Stars, Ugandan youth have an opportunity to exhibit their talent. All that has been missing is an appropriate investment in human capital, and Samsung is happy to partner with Airtel to achieve this goal. This investment will help spotlight Africa’s potential, and we are proud to be associated with such development.”

The Guest of Honor, the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Charles Bakkabulindi thanked both companies for their continued support to the development of football in Uganda, pledging to offer a hand whenever possible.

Fufa reiterated that Airtel Rising Stars initiative is the official feeder program for national U-17 team. This, it was reasoned, is because the project reaches all the major four regions of the country ensuring that the best footballers both boys and girls are identified.

Also present at the event were the Uganda Sports Press Association who played a friendly match with the Airtel Staff, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, and winners of the last ARS challenge Season.
