Kenya’s Senator Mutula Kilonzo Leaves Many Surprised

According to a relative the senator was working on Friday and even last night he was ok, he did not show any signs of ill health.

Mutula recently captured the Makueni county senate seat is remembered for numerous statements which did not go well with his fellow parliamentarians. When at the helm of the justice Ministry Mutula opposed the decision for the ICC suspects holding government positions despite his party leader Kalonzo Musyoka sitting on the fence on the matter.

Mutula was transferred from Justice Ministry to Education after he openly opposed the decision by Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto to contest for the presidency. In the education docket he surprised many when he openly supported the high school girls in wearing miniskirts citing that the schools are not meant to train nuns, a comparison that did not go well with Catholic Church.

Makueni governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana has called for calm in Makueni as the family of the late Kilonzo and cited that the government should investigate the short cause of death.

“I call upon all the residences of Makueni County as the family of the senator seeks answers on the cause of the death of Mutula. It’s sad that he left us within a small period of time,” said Kivutha.

Mutula Kilonzo played a pivotal role in the formation of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy and on his message of condolence, Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has wished his family well as they face the difficulty time.

The police were in his house which is located along Mombasa Highway near Lukenya early afternoon carrying out investigations on cause of his death.

Mutula Kilonzo was born in 1948 in Mbooni Makueni and attended Mbooni high school before joining Machakos School and later proceeded to University of Dar-es- salaam where he graduated with first class degree in law.

He joined politics in 2003 after being nominated to the 8th parliament by KANU. He decamped to ODM- Kenya and successfully clinched the Mbooni Parliamentary seat on the same seat in 2007. In the unity government Mutula was appointed as the Minister for Nairobi Metropolitan. When Martha Karua resigned from the Justice docket Mutula was reshuffled to the docket until last year when he was transferred to Education docket.

Towards the end of February this year Mutula Kilonzo dropped charges against the house help who had threatened to kill him. The Minister told senior principal magistrate Doreen Mulekyo that he and his family had decided to forgive Ms Irene Nduku Kasilu unconditionally.

Mutula said that he was aware that ‘the girl was just used by other people to intimidate him and his family but he has left her to reconcile with her conscience.”

Mutula Kilonzo becomes Kenya’s shortest serving Senator having served less than a month as Makueni senator.
