Rwanda Inflation Rate Rises

“The underlying inflation rate (excluding fresh food and energy) is increased by 1.89 percent if compared to the previous month and increased by 4.68 percent on annual change,” the statement read in part.

“The annual average underlying inflation rate is + 3.7 percent in January 2013 down from the previous month 3.9 percent.”

The Institute said said “the increase in the consumer price index of 1.37 is attributable primarily to the increase in Food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.23) and Education (35.18).”

The figures underline the need to intensify investments in the agricultural industry with the view to boost food production.

However, according to FAO’s Food Price Index for January 2013, World food prices remained steady after three months of decline with increased prices for oil and fats balancing out lower cereal and sugar prices.

FAO’s Food Price Index – which measures monthly changes in international prices of a basket of meat, dairy, cereals, oils and fats, and sugar – remained at 210 points in January, same as in December.

The Institute notes the ‘local goods’ increased by 6.34 on annual change with a monthly change of 1.81, while prices of the imported products increased by 3.04 on annual change with a monthly change of -0.38.

The prices of the fresh products had a positive annual change of 10.69 between January 2013 and January 2012.

In January 2013 the All Urban general index is established at 118.5 this stands for an increase of 1.37 percent over the previous month which was 116.9.

In annual change inflation in Rwanda increased by 5.67 percent compared to 3.88 percent in the previous month. This gives a general inflation rate by an annual average of 6.1% during the month of January 2013.
