The University rose 93 positions from the previous 1,173rd in the World in July 2012 to the current 1,080th in the world.
Makerere University at 9th in Africa is the best ranked university outside South Africa and the best in the region. Regionally, the University of Nairobi is placed at the 12th position and the University of Dar es Salam at the 15th position. The University of Cape Town that has previously topped the continent has now been displaced to second position by Stellenbosch University.
The current positioning on the continent is a demonstration of efficiency in the utilization of resources in the 90 Year old institution.
The eight South African Universities ranked ahead of Makerere are more highly endowed.
The 2009-2010 Edition of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) survey placed South Africa above Canada and the United Kingdom in terms of salary midpoint averages.
On average, A South African Professor earns 5 times the salary of a Ugandan Professor.
Furthermore, an analysis of the region’s top universities salaries reveals that a Professor at Makerere University takes home only 60 – 70 percent of what a Professor in other top universities in the region earns.
Dr. Vincent Ssembatya, Director Quality Assurance, Makerere University welcomed the improvement in ranking noting that, “Whereas endowment plays a key role in promoting research output, Makerere has over the years steadily improved her ranking.”
