A total of 7 candidates were on Friday nominated for the Aruu North Parliamentary seat.
The former seat holder, nurse http://coogomezplata.com/components/com_k2/controllers/controller.php Mrs. Aciro Lucy Otim who was kicked out by the court recently is among the nominees on independent ticket.
Her arch rival, Kidega James Nok of the National Resistance Movement party was also nominated alongside 4 other independent candidates including Ojera David, Nyero Francis, Oryema Justine and Komakech Henry Banya.
The Democratic Party also nominated one candidate in the names of Obina Benard Ollogi. DP President, Norbert Mao was said to be in the constituency yesterday afternoon according local radio reports.
The seat fell vacant on 8th February 2017 when the Court of Appeal in Kampala nullified the election of Aciro for breaching the electoral laws during the February 2016 general elections.
The Court subsequently ordered the Electoral Commission to organize a fresh parliamentary election in the area.
The electoral body on 15th February 2017 declared 2nd April this year as the election date for Aruu North parliamentary seat.
“As required by law the statutory deadline for conducting a Parliamentary by-election is sixty (60) days after notification from Clerk to Parliament on the occurrence of the vacancy. Accordingly, the Electoral Commission has approved the electoral programme for by-election of Member of Parliament for Aruu North County, with polling set for Thursday 6th April 2017,” part of the statement from the EC on 15th February said.
The race is said to be tight between Aciro and Kidega. Aciro defeated Kidega with only 2 votes in the last election when they scored 8,599 and 8,587 respectively.
