The novel tells the story of a woman called Sabina who calls her psychologist so that they can talk about her sexual addiction. Written in beautiful, symbolic language, Anais is able to present the story of a woman who loves her husband but can’t seem to stop having affairs and how her addiction hurts her soul.
Anais Nin wrote this book after World War II which seems to be a favorite setting of mine but many of its themes affect us today. Why should we be loyal when all kinds of pleasures are open to us? Pleasure doesn’t necessarily mean happiness. Anais Nin is considered one of the first voices of feminist writings in modern literature and she is a pleasure to read.
Her descriptive language is her strongest point. The first chapter is worth mentioning where she describes Sabina for the first time and her relationship with her psychologist aptly code named the lie detector.
This is a book for true literary die hards.
