Chimpreports has established that other participating countries in this international forum are Angola, Congo Brazzaville, Central African Republic, Sudan and South Sudan and the East Africa Legislative Assembly.
Rwanda Senator Bizimana Jean Damascene who is President of Amani Forum said the outcome will help to find better proposals entrenched with the regional context.
“During this workshop, we will do deep analysis of why and the problems caused by these rebel groups in general, we shall as well discuss in particular the Eastern DRC crisis and we believe to devise better and suitable regional proposals to our governments,” said Bizimana.
“Unlike NGOs and Group of Experts’ reports that don’t look at root causes of the conflict, we have a direct interest and cultural background that position us to come up with workable regional solution,” he concluded
The meeting is also a good opportunity to establish a new dynamic of dialogue and cooperation among members of parliament of ICGLR as well as equipping them with skills in conflict management, prevention and consolidation in the region.
Equally, discussions will talk on the functioning and financing of armed group while examining support measures for victims and witnesses vis-à-vis justice.
Amani is a Parliamentarian forum which was created 15 years ago to promote peace, work for a conflict-free Great Lakes Region and to focus on building, keeping and consolidating peace as well as stability and sustainable development in the Region.
While it has achieved in helping to find solutions in recent years including the DRC and Rwanda relations in the past, post elections problems in Kenya and Tanzania, the Forum still has a lot to do and one of the biggest challenges remaining is illegal armed groups including FRDLR and Lord Resistance Movement and the likes that remain threats to regional security and citizens welfare
The M23 DRC mutineers over the weekend threatened to launch fresh attacks if Kinshasha does not hold meaningful talks with them.
The fighting in the eastern part of Congo has left hundreds killed and thousands displaced as refugees to Rwanda and Uganda.
