Kayihura subsequently directed the Special Investigations Unit to hunt for Kananura. All his plush residences in Bukoto, Muyenga and Kololo had been searched by detectives.

A highly placed source in Kayihura’s office tells our Entertainment Desk that Kananura escaped to Dubai on Sunday night after playing cat-and-mouse chase games with security agents.

“Kananura was on Sunday afternoon briefly spotted at Kabira Country Club in Bukoto. And our border and airport security was alerted just hours after the murder to ensure the businessman is seized if he tried sneaking out,” said a source.

Kananura, the source added, eluded security at Malaba border before boarding a Dubai-bound plane.

However, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Ibin Ssenkumbi, on Tuesday evening, said police had no doubts that Kananura is still hiding in Kampala.

“Kananura is yet to move out of the country. We shall get him,” said Ssenkumbi.

Another source said Kananura, an international car dealer, knows very well that attempting to flee Uganda over a murder case would make him vulnerable to the Interpol.

“We are hoping that Kananura will produce himself to Police because he has a family and all his businesses, are located in Kampala. We live in a very small world. This situation (hiding from authorities) is not sustainable,” the source, who has been briefed on the progress of the investigations, told us.

Police case files registration numbers CR 2830/2012 and SD28/30/9, 2012 of manslaughter and assault, respectively, have been opened up at Kiira Road Police Station to enable investigations as police wait for Kananura’s arrest and prosecution.

Kananura is also a brother to Makerere University Chancellor Prof Mondo Kagonyera.

The flamboyant tycoon is well known for living a lavish life, splashing money in exclusive nightspots and cruising state-of-the-art rides.

Ssenkumbi urged the public to provide any information that could lead to Kananura’s arrest.
