60 Schools Closed In Mbarara Town

Mbarara Mayor Wilson Tumwiine says most schoold didn't adhere to required standards

The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has extended his heart-felt condolences to the Muslim community for the increasing cases of murder that have claimed several of Muslim clerics in the country.

Kabaka Mutebi appealed to the government to carry out investigations and imprison the culprits over the murder of the late Muslim leaders.

Authorities in Mbarara municipality have closed 61 schools which they say are falling below the minimum required teaching standards.

Tumwebaze revealed that some schools, including those with kindergarten sections, were operating in unhygienic structures, mainly rental houses, without sufficient toilet facilities, high triple beds for very young kids, posing health risks to the children.

At some mixed Secondary Schools, adds the report, boys and girls were sharing dormitories and toilets “with no privacy whatsoever,” while others had makeshift classrooms, untidy premises, and had no dining halls or recreation facilities.

Some other school structures were found with wide cracks in their classrooms, no safety arrangement, no fences, burglar proof in dormitories, very close to the road, operating in incomplete residential houses, poor drainage, no lightening arresters, no teaching flame work, expired license, Wooden structures, expiry license for at least 7years back.

The Mbarara Town Clerk Johnson Baryantuma Munono told Chimpreports that most of the affected schools were not registered and lacked qualified teachers.

He asked parents with children in the schools not to be duped into paying for the the soon-to-open first term.
