6 Held in Connection to Stolen NIC Items

Police in Fort Portal have arrested and detained at least 6 suspected high way robbers most of whom are residents of Kampala and Wakiso districts.

According to the officer-in-charge of CID at Fort Portal Police Station, Joshua Tusingwire, the six were intercepted and arrested at a road block in Rugombe trading center along the Fort Portal–Kampala highway on Wednesday morning.

Tusingwire said that the suspects were arrested while travelling from Fort Portal to Kampala in a commuter taxi Reg. No. UAP 587C.

Tusingwire adds that the suspects were found in possession of two sacks of harmful breaking materials that included axes, pangs, gas cylinder, and master keys among others that were supposedly to be used in committing crime.

Police said their arrest came after unknown thugs broke into National Insurance Company (NIC) shop in Fort Portal town on Tuesday and took off with shs 200, 000 and a computer.

 

Rwenzori Regional Police Spokesperson, Bashir Bakari Muga explains that after the incident, they informed Kyenjojo, Kasese and Ntoroko police stations to stage road blocks so as to have some suspects arrested.

 

He says that when the police at Rugombe trading center intercepted and checked in the vehicle, they found the NICO insurance CPU that had been stolen the previous night.

 

Bakari said that Police suspect that these thugs have been staging on highways to rob passengers of their property and break into people’s houses.

 

He said due to the evidence provided, the suspects will be taken to court on charges of house breaking and theft.

 

Police suspect that the vehicle they are using in the robbery activities was also stolen.
The Uganda People’s Defense Forces [UPDF] have banned all reporters from accessing the residence of the fallen Internal Affairs Minister Gen Aronda Nyakairima.

The posh house in Buziga will effectively be a no-go for all journalists according to the army spokesperson Col Paddy Ankunda.

This Ankunda says this is meant to allow the deceased’s family members some privacy.

The army has since yesterday been incensed by the various rumors circulating on social media about the likely cause of Gen Aronda’s demise.

Aronda was found motionless by an air hostess while he returned from an official trip from South Korea. Investigations have since been kick-started to get to the bottom of what caused his death.
