“Rwanda had this seat during the 1994 Genocide perpetrated against Tutsi; nearly 20 years after this genocide, we have a lot to contribute to the UN as we rebuilt our country” said Minister Louise Mushikiwabo in a press briefing on Tuesday.
The Minister also spoke about the recommendations of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Summit held in Kampala, Uganda last week.
Mushikiwabo said that the conference was successful on different fronts as far as the security situation in Eastern DRC is concerned, which was also the focus of the summit.
“The region is committed to help the DRC to bring peace in Kivu, we commend the establishment of the Expanded Joint Mechanism (EJM) which will be launched on September 14. This mechanism will monitor military activities along the Rwanda-DRC border and will clarify the ongoing false accusations of Rwanda’s implications in this conflict,” she said.
The EJM team will be composed by different senior military officers from all ICGLR member countries.
The Minister said also that the Chairperson of ICGLR and President of Uganda, Yoweli Museveni has tasked to continue political talks with M23 in agreement with DRC and ICGLR members.
Shortly after Bunagana and Rutshuru fell to M23 rebels a few months ago, Museveni telephoned its commanders, seeking a peaceful solution to their grievances.
In fact the rebels had threatened to storm Goma and proceed to Kinshasha. But the M23 rebels later retreated after holding talks with Museveni at State House, Entebe.
Mushikiwabo also briefly discussed on the upcoming “ Rwanda Day” event which will be held in Boston, Massachusetts from the 21st to 22nd September 2012.
Minister Mushikiwabo said that this is an opportunity for Rwandans leaving abroad to participate in their country development through getting firsthand information about what is going on in their homeland as well as how they contribute to their country’s development.
