Breaking: Thugs Raid Human Rights Group’s Kampala Office

“Police and a security firm, Security Group, which has since been in charge of our security here are involved in investigating this case,” said Sewanyana.

“Desks were ransacked and doors broken,” Sewanyana told Chimpreports news desk on Monday morning, adding, “The guard was drugged and could not explain anything.”

It’s yet unclear whether the raid was aimed at sabotaging the human rights group’s activities in the country.

FHRI is an independent, non-governmental, non-partisan and not-for-profit human rights advocacy organization established in December 1991.

According to the organisation’s website, it seeks to remove impediments to democratic development and meaningful enjoyment of the fundamental freedoms enshrined in the 1995 Uganda Constitution and other internationally recognized human rights instruments.

FHRI is legally registered, as a non-governmental human rights organization under the Non-Governmental Organizations Registration Statute 1989.

It is a charitable, not-for-profit organization. It is duly incorporated under the Companies Act, Cap.110 as a body corporate.

FHRI addresses the entire range of human rights: civil and political as well as economic, social and cultural rights as defined in international human rights covenants.

This is done through public education, capacity building efforts for the community leaders as well as strengthening collaboration with grass root structures, strategic partnerships, media campaigns, mass empowerment, research, monitoring, documentation and reporting; strategic litigation and legislative analysis, review and advocacy.
