Benjamin said that they want to be recognized as a region such that they can advocate for development of the area.
“We want the president to look into this because we have been taken whole sale. We have different interests therefore different planning,” he added.
Greater Bushenyi comprises of five districts of Rubirizi, Buhweju, Sheema, Mitooma and Bushenyi.
The districts were created in 2010 and started to operate on 1 July.
The creation of these districts caused a lot of enmity among politicians in the area where some were against the split.
Ministers Kahinda Otafiire, Richard Nduhura and Tarsis Kabwegyere had fought hard to stop the split but they were over powered by those who were for it.
Ephraim Kamuntu, Elioda Tumwesigye and other local leaders mobilized residents to support the split of the district into five.
The split caused a lot of problems especially financial as revenue collection dwindled. Bushenyi district has so far decided to rent out part of the administrative offices in order to get revenue.
Greater Bushenyi is occupied by cultivators while Mbarara is originally for pastoralists. Benjamin said that for the development of the people in the district of greater Bushenyi, there is need to have a uniformed concentration depending on their way of life.
