Sources at the University said during the vetting, Baryamureeba tied with Kirumira in the third position.

However, in a re-run, Kirumira beat Baryamureeba by just one vote; shattering the young professor’s hopes of running the University administration in future.

The news will rock Makerere where Baryamureeba was expected to emerge victorious in the hotly contested race.

Makerere publicist Ritah Namisango told “The Senate people are compiling their report. For me I don’t sit in Senate. I will send you information later.”

The Makerere University Senate was considering the report of the Search Committee for position of Vice Chancellor which had selected five candidates who included Baryamureeba, Ddumba, Kirumira, Nawangwe and Prof. Eli Katunguka.

Katunguka did not survive the evaluation meeting at the Senate, chaired by Prof. Sande Tickodri-Togboa, the acting Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration.

The Senate will now recommend the three names to the University Council, which is the supreme governing body of the institution to select two candidates before sending the list to Chancellor Prof. Mondo Kagonyera to name the next Vice Chancellor.
