The rebels reportedly pounded the towns of Lubiriha and Kasindi in the wee hours of Friday, sending government troops into disarray.

The situation remains tricky considering that latest intelligence showed that ADF had finalized plans to invade Uganda.

Just last week, Army Commander Gen. Aronda Nyakairima and a senior military intelligence officer Col. Herbert Mbonye were in Kasese to assess the rebel threat.

They comforted residents that UPDF would respond with maximum force if ADF attempted to attack their homes.

2nd Division Commander Brig. Patrick Kankiriho was not readily available for comment but residents say security has now been tightened to alarming levels.

The fighting comes just days before the Kasese Woman MP by-elections.

Mpondwe was until today the safest border point into Congo after M23 rebels overran Bunagana last month.

The Eastern Congo has lately been insecure with heavy fighting between rebels and Congolese forces.

The African Union summit last month agreed to form a joint force to eliminate the rebel threat in the region.

Speaking to our news desk last week, Kankiriho said well trained troops had been stationed on the border with Congo in preparation of any possible attacks by ADF rebels based in Nadui, Eastern Congo.

“For us we are ready for any eventuality. If anybody attacks us, we shall fight and defeat them,” Kankiriho said.
