Police Officer killed in attack on post at Kasese, Western Uganda
A police officer has been killed and two others seriously injured during an attack on the Mukokya police post in Kasese District, Western Uganda.
On Fri, July 27 at approximately 6am a group of 60 suspected Rwenzururu tribal agitators attacked the post with one automatic rifle and an assortment of spears, machetes, knives and shields.
Constable Ssemakula Mugabi was killed in the ensuing battle. The post commander Corporal Sunday Levi was stabbed and Constable Mandule Wilson was also injured. Both officers were rushed to Kirembe Hospital and are said to be in a critical condition.
Three attackers were killed by police and two police rifles were taken by attackers as they retreated.
Investigating officers have recovered a phone from one of the attackers which officers are confident will give them a definite lead in finding the perpetrators of this attack.
Only immediate police intervention prevented more death. The situation is now under control as investigations into the incident continue.
The reason for the attack is not known at this point, but thought to be connected to local inter-tribal conflict and is not connected to the recent activities across the border in the Congo.
The investigation is being led by the Regional Police Commander for Western Uganda, Commissioner Wilson Kwanya.
